Centerpiece Cents - Creating A Budget For Your Wedding Centerpiece
By Stephanie Smith
Weddings can be expensive and it doesn't take much for the costs to add up. Your wedding centerpieces don't have to be the cause of more financial stress. With a bit of planning you can have beautiful centerpieces without spending a small fortune.

The first and most important step is to have a centerpiece budget, preferably a per table cost because it's an easy way to keep track of your numbers. The number of tables is bound to change as people are added and removed from the guest list, just make sure there is a bit of extra room in your budget to accommodate for this. Any extra centerpieces you may have can be used for the cake or guest book tables and then given to special guests at the end of the festivities.

You don't have to know what you want your centerpieces to look like yet, determine your budget based on what you can afford and what you want to spend. Come up with a reasonable amount, say $10 per table and build that into your overall wedding budget. Play

with the numbers until the bottom line works with your financial resources.

If your budget doesn't have room for centerpieces once all the necessities are factored in, consider having centerpieces that aren't to be taken home by your guests. Some halls have table decorations that can be used, often for a small charge. It may be an option worth looking into.

Once your budget is set you will need to stick by it. Now is not the time to be impulse buying if you happen to find something that is just irresistible, even though there will be plenty of opportunities to do so! There will be enough unexpected expenses as it is that will wreak havoc on your budget, don't let your centerpieces be one of them. With some careful planning you'll be able to put together great ideas that are within your budget.

DREAM DIY Tools

Ok, so we've seen the most useful tools thread....what about tools we wish were out there? Post your wishlist....who knows, someone out there may have a solution!

My list:

Something to pull the fabric through the back of the machine to keep it straight.

A "fuel gage" on my bobbin so I'll know to stop before the thread runs out instead of sewing merrily along and not noticing.

I know there's more, but my bobbin just ran out........

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 6 replies

God put my butt too close to the ground...

so lots (most) triangle scarfs are way too long. By the time I get the pointed end off the ground I've got a hug role around my waist. Currently I have a pretty gray stretchy lace shawl. Can I cut it from the top to make it more sized for me? Will it unravel horribly?

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 3 replies

Bra Bases - I know it's in here somewhere?????

So I have a Bra Question...

Without getting too much in detail, I need to have a basic tribal-style bra for a show this Saturday. I have the embellishment part down, I think, so I'm not too worried about that, but I know my teacher is going to require that my bra not have the original fastenings on it for the performance. I understand the basics of converting to the criss-cross style back and was planning on doing that. I was going to use 1" twill tape as my new straps, but my question is about doing the back part.

I was planning on not cutting off the ENTIRE back and sides, but leaving about a 2" "nubbin" of the stretchy sides on each cup, then just folding about 1/2" from the end over my D-ring and sewing it down good. A friend advised me that that wouldn't work, and that I would have to cover my side nubbins in fabric before I could sew them (which takes much more time, which I don't really have and I'd like to leave some "give" in the band). Is this for aesthetic reasons, or structural ones? The sides are not lacy or see-through or anything and I am comfortable leaving them uncovered, but will my stitches not hold in the original side-material?? I don't want the D-ring coming undone mid-dance.

My only other option is just to use a tube of fabric to cover the straps and back in the meantime, but I think that looks kinda ghetto (just a personal preference).

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 19 replies

A little help, please?

I've got a pair of dance pants, similar to melos that are too long in the inseam. I've decided the best way to fix them is to take them up at the waist, but can't quite figure out how to do so, since they have an attached over-skirt. There is elastic at the waist, but I'm having a hard time trying to tack up the waistline because of the over-skirt. Any suggestions on how to make this easier? Most USEFUL Costuming Tools List

Since we all DIY costumes here to one extent or another, I thougth it would be cool for us to list some of our fave costuming tools that we use. What are some of your faves? Also, where can we get them and about how much do they cost?

Here's mine:

* Tiny CLAMPS. OMG, they are so useful when fitting bras/belts. I found them at Home Depot for about 70 cents each! I bought a half-dozen, in case I need some for more than one project simultaneously. You can use them to clamp down bra straps in place so you know where to put the hooks, on belts so you can keep one side attached while you figure out hook/eye positions on the other side, or just to keep the belt pieces in place while you check the fit for any gaps, etc. These little things are worth their weight in GOLD!

* Irwin 'Quick Grip" Clamps. I bought 2 of them, don't recall how much they were (available at Home Depot), but they are also an invaulable tool. I use them when I cover bras with pretty costume fabric. I measure my rib-cage and then position the clamps on my kitchen counter so that they are 1/2 my rib-cage measurement apart from each other. To make sure, I'll wrap my measuring tape around the clamps to make sure the measurement matches my rib cage. The clamps have a metal rod that sticks straight up. Then I put the bra on the clamps, as if I was wearing it, so that it's stretched to my size. Then just pin & cut the fabric to the bra and stitch in place.

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 26 replies

Idea...Lemme know what you think

So I was sitting on the floor doing one project or another and my b/f comes into the room and asks if I could use these metal circle things that were apparently the tops and bottoms of those consontrated juice cans. (His hobby is makeing wine and sometimes uses those. It's great) And I had them sitting in my craft bin of doom and got stuck with the idea that they would be great for the tribal head band and new fringe belt I want to make. Also does anyone know how to make them into half domes? I know it can be done to bottle caps just not sure how.

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 3 replies

How to make a sword sheath/ cover/ carrying case

Bought a great sword (my 1st one!) from Audrena. Here's the link (http://www.audrena.com/BalancingSword.php) and I have the 2007 Style. When ordered, there were no cases available. So, I am walking around w/ my lovely sword in a bath towel. Any advice on how to make or where to buy a reasonably price "cover" would be appreciated. If you know a wholesaler, that would be great as a lot of my BD classmates have the same issue -- sword and no case. Thanks! Tribal Booty Box - Back from the Dead!

Let me start out by apologizing for the ridiculous delay. Things went sort of haywire in my world after Gustav hit. I think I might have had about 3 massage clients the entire month of September and October hasn't been so great, either (though it is slowly starting to pick back up). Honestly, the only way we've been able to eat is by doing fire performances (which there has fortunately been quite a few of) and by the generosity of my awesome parents. SO...I haven't been able to spare even the dinky amount of cash to get this thing rolling.

HOWEVER...Katie/Pyra, being the kick ass woman she is, has offered to send it on it's way. Say it with me..."THANK YOU KATIE!!!!" :)

SOOOOOO....Is everyone still in? My fingers are dying!!!

This is my latest project...finished after 3 days of almost non-stop sewing and beading...I did cover this one and removed, then reinforced the straps with ribbon...and the back is ribbon laced, too. It's going to be part of a costume I'm working on for a hafla in January. The rest is an off-white, very Victorian looking skirt and a lovely Indian belt that I've added to, also. Once it's all finished, I'll post pics.

What do you think? Worth the finger torture?

http://people.tribe.net/d8d66e42-46f6-45f7-88d0-4c16d6a75f3b/photos/2094777d-18d9-4dd8-bd2e-640d8ed2be7f

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 4 replies

Gypsy/Flamenco skirt help please!

I want to make a skirt like the one in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnB14wh_-KY

I have a couple of questions that I really need help answering:

1. What kind of fabric should i be using to make it swirl like that (about 45 seconds in)?
2. I know its made of panels, but how many circles is that skirt made up of. As in, if I was making it as a circle skirt, is it one full circle, 1 and a half, or two full circles? I hope that makes sense.

Also, if anyone has a link to a pattern (free preferably) that would be great!

Thanks in advance!

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 13 replies

Skipped to my fabric store to look for items to decorate it with and it had closed due to flooding.

Does anyone know of any UK online resources where I can get sparkly and feathery adornments and if poss offcuts of purple velvet????

I only have 4 weeks to go and cant chance an overseas company which is kinda sucky

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 1 reply

What part do I need to get altered help!!!!!!!

So my lovely bellydance top and gloves/gauntlets arrived today. And my arms mustve toned up coz the size I ordered was correct at time of ordering but with a 4 week wait coz its an import the gloves are too baggy.

Now they are a little long me being a shortie my arms are in proportion, and when I pull em taught they seem ok. Do I need to get them shortened and have stronger elastic put in at the bicep part or do I need to do that and get them taken in at the seam so that when I bend my arms they dont sag?

Top fits the girls ok lol but its tie at the back and its a broadish tie which my chunky back is causing to curl in on itself and cause a back version of a muffin top. Its silk so can I get hooks and eyes put in, and turn it into a bra fastening back and just leave the neck 'ribbon' as a tie or wont that work on silk?

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 2 replies

Pirate Bellydance Costume - need ideas

Hello lovely and talented people! I need to pick your brains about a pirate bellydance costume. I have a rough idea of a Turkish vest with off-shoulder gypsy blouse underneath, 25-yard skirt, and salwar, but I could use some input as to color/pattern schemes and what to do for a belt. ...new Dharma iDye try-out

I was excited to see Dharma Trading putting out a dye that could be used in the washing machine. I'm not much into dying fabrics, etc - but I like having the option. ;-) Oh, I know, the grocery store brand is out there - but I think I like having the experience of Dharma in that little color packet.

So, here goes my review...

item to dye: white cotton jersey dress <bought from Dharma)
color: "Brilliant Blue" - 1packet
washing machine method - hot water - 45 minutes - then washed in cold with a touch of detergent / rinsed in cold - lightly dried in the dryer / currently on hanger to finish by air drying
The color is just what I wanted. The dress isn't quite dry and looks splotchy due to damp spots...but it's not all due to that. It looks like the dye took a bit unevenly. I don't fault Dharma for this - they state the brighter colors might need 2 packets.

item to dye: 3 rayon sashes (6"x72")(and yep, from Dharma)
color: "Chartreuse" 1 packet
stove top method (washer doesn't have super low water level setting) - simmered 30 minutes / stirring frequently - washed lightly by hand with a drop or two of dish detergent - rinsed & lightly dried in dryer - may need to rinse again, in the machine, just to be sure they're rinsed out well
Again, the color turned out well. I think I was expecting something a little lighter in shade, but overall, I'm pleased.

My next project will be the scrap left over from my tablecloth skirt. I want to experiment with the dye (black) for polyesters. ((Remember, I made this skirt from inexpensive tablecloths from WallyWorld.))

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 12 replies

online crochet patterns for bellydance costumes?

There's so many free patterns online and I could spend hours looking...so I've come to the experts! Does anyone have a listing of free online crochet patterns for items that could be used for bellydance? I'm thinking of fingerless gloves/gauntlets, shrugs or belly tops, maybe a full mesh body cover....what else is there that bellydancers could use? If anyone can help me narrow down my search it would be so appreciated...you all know how precious time is to a busy bellydancer!!! Mixed Booty Box anyone?

Seeing as how Nicole's life has been topsy-turvy as of late thanks to Gustav, I have volunteered to take over as Box Mom for the Mixed (ie, both Cab & Tribal...and everything in between) Booty Box.

First, for those of you who don't know what the Booty Boxes are...as Nicole said, it's a way to get cool new stuff in exchange for the stuff you have that you don't want anymore. The Box Mom gets a box and puts random bits and pieces in it (DIY components, finished pieces, fabric, etc.). She sends it to the first person on the list who takes some out and puts more in, then sends it to the next person and so on, until the end of the line when it goes back around to the first couple of people, so make up for the original skimpiness of the box.

RULES OF THE MIXED BOX:

1) To keep it from going on forever, sign-up will be limited to the first 10 people to respond here (we'll do others later if you don't get it on this one).

2) I will then PM you to ask for your mailing address details, and will give you my contact information in return.

3) To keep everything flowing well, we ask that you (a) post when you receive & mail out the box in the "Mixed Box Tracking" thread that I will start when I send it out & (b) that you send out the box to the next person within ONE WEEK of receiving it.

4) The "box" will be the large USPS Priority Mail Flat-Rate Box, which has a postage cost of $12.95 PLUS $0.65 for delivery confirmation (gives us a tracking number, so we don't "lose the box in the mail").

5) Each person will take items out & put items in. Be sure to put your name on the items you add to the box so that the person who ends up with the item can thank you/ask you questions about it/squeee over it... Items can be cabaret, tribal, tribaret, steampunk, gothic...they can be trims, baubles, fabric, hair adornments, costume pieces...you name it! So long as it can reasonably fit in the box, it's ok.

Alright - first come, first serve -- who wants in on this round?

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 22 replies

How to cut a t shirt into a choli?

I can't find the thread that gave instructions on how to take an old t shirt and cut it into a choli with long ties that go around your back. Can anyone help?
Also, is there a way of altering blouses into cholis as well? Is it as simple as cutting them to expose the belly, elastic around to keep it from riding up, and maybe removing the sleeves if desired? I'm thinking the neckline/collar would keep you from having a bit of cleavage showing. Thanks to all.
Margaret

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 12 replies

Beading a stretch mesh tummy cover....

I've been thinking about a little project. I might have posted a picture of this within the last year, but I don't recall where I posted it. If I can find it, I'll post a link.

I remember seeing a costume for sale... it was a lovely turquoise blue bedleh worn with a black skirt. The owner of the costume paired this ensemble with what appeared to be a black mesh tummy cover that had some matching blue sequinned appliques on it. It made a bedleh/skirt combination look more like an Egyptian dress! I really like the idea as on rare occasion, I have been offered gigs where I need to be more "covered up" in the midriff area, which isn't what I do (so I had to decline). So rather than spending $600 on a dress, I thought it would be a cool idea to just buy one or two of these midriff covers and embellish them a little to match a couple of my bedlehs.

I was just wondering about sewing beads/beaded appliques on stretch mesh. How do you do this and accommodate for the stretch in the fabric? I know if you don't allow for the stretch, the fabric will at least pucker, or worse, run/tear! Let's assume I'll use an applique... how would you go about sewing on an applique to a stretch mesh midriff cover?

(PS) I'm planning on ordering them from DesignsbyJanie (of Wiggles of the West fame!).

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 10 replies

Hi, just made my first costume--sort of a 20s vamp theme--and while I was pleased with it over all, I couldn't stop the left side (the twins' less attractive member--from gapping at the top. I tried tape, padding, tightening and re-tightening the straps, covering said padding, sticking yet more padding beneath and it finally came down to, "Okay, that back bend is just going to have to be a lean back".

Story of my life. Very depressing.

Any suggestions? No surgery planned in the near future, so I imagine I'll run into this problem again...sigh.

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 5 replies

25 yard skirts

I may never have the patience to make one, but they are so pretty! I'm curious as to the width of the tiers for a skirt with a 25 yard hem. I've made 10 yard skirts, with four tiers, and I just rip strips of fabric selvage to selvage, then sew these together. I use one strip for the top tier, 2 for the second, 4 for the third, and 7 or 8 for the fourth. How many strips would you use in making a 25 yard-er? I'm guessing the bottom tier would be around 20, but what about the others?

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 13 replies

Ruffler Foot and Shirring Foot

To make your fabulous tiered skirts even faster than the standard way theirs two ways to speed it up.

For those with only a sewing machine, theres the ruffler foot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu8m0dop-iA&feature=related

For those who also have a serger/overlock there's the shirring foot.
http://www.sewingmachine-sales.co.uk/sewing_machine_info/video/18/gathering-shirring-foot.html

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 3 replies

I got a new machine!

I'm super excited, my wonderful dude got me a new Janome machine for my b-day. I guess he got tired of listening to me swear at my 30 year old Singer. I read thru the manual last night, and today I will be scheduling a class at local dealer on how to use it, there are more buttons and whistles on this thing than I will ever figure out on my own. I almost peed from excitement when I realized it had automatic needle threading.

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 3 replies

working w/ stretch lace

Good morning DIYers. Zina here asking for advice...

Garment: strech lace top that I wanted to crop. I took out the lining (it was ugly), cut down around the neckline and cropped the bottom. At the neckline I didn't want a raw edge. I also didn't want the neck to stretch any more so what to do??? I took thin bias tape and attached it to the neckline. It looks nice and finished but worked exactly the opposite of what I wanted. The neckline is now all stretched out so it gapes and is ruffly. What did I do wrong? I can take the bias tape off but how can I finish the neckline without stretching it all out?

Thank you much.

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 2 replies

stretch lace top, again

I posted this earlier from another computer now it's gone...spooky...

I cropped a stretch lace top after removing the ugly lining. The neckline was really high so I cut it down, too. In order to not have a raw cut at the neck, I attached small width bias tape. The tape totally stretched out the neck so it gapes when I have it on and move. What did I do wrong? What would be a better way of finishing the neck to have a pretty edge but retain the stretch?

Thanks much.

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 1 reply

Do you think this will work

Have seen a nice diamante Alice Band which is basically two thin silver bands joined at sides with a wavy diamante line going between. My outfit is mainly purple and silver so was thinking of trying to get a broad purple or purple metallic band the correct width and hot gluing the two togther so purple shows betwen the diamantes

What do we think?

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 4 replies

Tracking B-Dance Booty Box - #2

Woooo Hoo!

Round #2 (fabric, trim/embellishments, patterns - oh and a small bag of what I call "dancer droppings" - those odd beads, coins, bells, earrings, etc we always seem to find after a gaggle of dancers has passed through) is starting in Alaska with Xanthea. I've tried to set the mailing schedule by region, so it's Pacific Coast, Mid US, then East Coast.
;D If it looks like I've screwed up my geography, let me know ;D

Here's the line - up ...
1. Xanthea (AK)
2. Kate (WA)
3. Meeow (CA)
4. Lasair (LA)
5. Rya (IN)
6. Jeannine J (PA)
7. Alecia (NY)
8. Candace (NY)
9. Erika (ME)
10. Just for a giggle...

or maybe not ;-) ;-)

My dance partner & I are considering a piece of music for the December show - hey, what can I say? The *muse* struck.

Anyway, brain storm with me here...bellydance meets 1920's flapper...

So far, we've come up with lace circle skirts - bustled back - and black bras embellished with some pearls...and, of course, long pearl strand necklaces

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 38 replies

...status of (both) B'Dance Booty Boxes

The first box almost made it through 20+\- people......but is now ??""lost in the mail""??
I'm guessing here 'cause the last person to have the box seems to have fallen off the planet.

The second box made it about halfway (there were only 8 on this list) before, once again, being......"lost in the mail". I started a replacement box, but I didn't have much at the time to create a real *goodie* box. I'm not sure exactly where this one is - I'll check my folder at home and try to get an answer.

So,
Box #1 - for those of us left on the list, we're...uh...hmm...well, left out
Box #2 - am thinking there's still hope that it's betwixt-n-between

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 2 replies

I have a problem...

And I can't believe I never noticed it before.

My husband, the future emphysema and cancer patient, smokes like a chimney. I took some of my pieces to show to a friend and when I took them out of the bag, they stink to high heaven of smoke.

I nearly cried.

My husband swears he's going to quit. I'll believe it when I don't see it. That's not the problem. How do I get that ashtray smell out of the clothes? Some of this stuff can't be washed as I'm afraid it will ruin the tassels. I tried Febreze and while it smells nice, I'm not sure that's the way to go.

I know that from now on each piece is going to be sealed into its own little bag with a lavendar sachet or something. I was so disgusted and embarassed. I can't sell stuff like that! A couple dog hairs is one thing, but that was just gross.

Help me. Please.

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 14 replies

headband bases

What material seems to make a good headband base? I'm thinking of something soft and pliable as opposed to the hard plastic headband bases you get in the stores, unless that really is a good option. I see a lot of great fabric headbands in the pics in groups but I can't figure out what material peope are using! :)

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 15 replies

nyc fabric store recommendation: please!

I am going to be in nyc this coming weekend and i am going to look for fabric for a cabaret costume. selection in upstate ny is limited. i am wondering if anyone has recommendations for places that i can get a good deal on very shiny, very light handed fabric for a skirt. i don't want to wander such a large city and my aunt (who lives there, and i'll be staying with) and my dad (who grew-up going there all the time) are the ones i count on for directions there, and neither of them sew.

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 11 replies

...advice? *violet* dye turned blue

Quick backstory -
My classmates will be dyeing 100% cotton jersey dresses for a group number in December. All products (dresses & "iDye") are from Dharma Trading.

Anyway, one lady used the stove top method, with *violet* and says it has turned out blue - even though the water looked purple. I haven't seen this yet to describe the exact shade of blue, but it's blue enough that she doesn't like it. <<She doesn't do *blue*.>>

FYI, I've used the stove top method for small rayon scarves - chartreuse and crimson. Both of those came out fine. The dress I dyed using Brilliant Blue came out blue - splotchy, but blue. <<More of an operator error thing, I think...too much water for (1) packet of dye and maybe not long enough on the machine agitation - 45 minutes>>

I need advice. Any hints and/or tips would be greatly appreciated. I've ordered add'l dye for everyone, so we'll be using the washing machine method, hot water, 2 dye packets and, at least, 45 minute agitation time...oh, and the salt ((per dye instructions)).

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 19 replies

New booty box - Box Mom Nicole

I'm starting one with either tribal or cab items. In the next month or so, I may start one exclusively for tribal.

If you want to be in either of them, let me know, and I'll get the line up going. Speak up quickly, because each one will only have 10 spots, with the first 4 receiving it a second time if they want, to make up for the skimpiness that naturally happens at the beginning of any round robin.

You'll have 5 days to get it on to the next person, but if life happens to intervene, please just keep us posted.

I'll be buying the just over $12 box, so that will be the postage no matter how heavy it gets.

Scraps of fabric are okay, but they should be exceptional. Since this is a DIY tribe, broken bits are fine, too. Someone may have patience to fix it. :)

This is tons of fun! I used to do it all the time on a mail art website and the surprises you get are great! I was involved in the first box here on tribe and got some discontinued yarn I've been desperately wanting so I could make a fringe belt that was an exact match to my red and orange belt and yarn falls. YAY!

posted in DIY/ Bellydance on a Budget - 57 replies
